So my fiance just showed me this awesome video on Facebook and some quick Google-fu found me the name of the product (the Facebook video had the first part cut out that shows the name). These are awesome. Is this old news I'm just now discovering?

Just for a comparison, I wonder what that truck would be able to do with a good set of snow tires and 4-wheel low range. Probably the really deep snow it would get nowhere, but snow tires would probably be sufficient for anywhere else. Also, would a smaller set be useful for a front wheel drive car, like mine? It seems like powering the front treads & having free wheeling rear tracks would be fine for most situations.

It is funny you say that because my first thought was "can I put them on my Camry?"

I'm sure you're right that in most situations a good set of snows would be just as effective, mine have saved my ass the last week or so of terrible weather, but tracks = I'MDRIVINGATANK!!!!!!

After driving my lesbowagon down a street with over a foot of unplowed snow with 3-4ft snow drifts, with barely a hesitation, I found out these tracks are useless. Most I'd go is studded winters as I'd never have to remove them till the end of the season.

Not that it matters, but I wonder how parasitic those things are as far as horsepower.

Yeah, I looked up their website. The cost of those things? $25,000, I shit you not. Yeah, I'd think a set of snows would be much more cost effective. $25K buys a lot of tires & wrecker service when you over estimate your capabilities.

It's a good question, and I think it depends on how they work. If they are simply direct drive, and the tires don't lose friction driving the tread I would imagine not much, but if they are direct drive you are limited to driving in reverse the whole time (however, you can drive really fast backwards in drive). If they aren't direct drive I would imagine that there is a bit more loss in changing the direction of rotation.
